Industry frustration

Lefteris Haritos, president of Hellenic Film Academy, is tackling the issue in his welcoming speech. This subject echoed with acceptance speeches from all winning filmmakers.

The Greek Ministry of Culture and its institutions are Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Centre (Ekkomed), which operates cash rebates and tax incentive schemes after absorbing the Greek Film Centre, and are the main targets of industry rage.

They are responsible for substantial delays in cash rebates paid for foreign co-productions and local works, as well as insufficient amounts available for selective production and development schemes nationwide. Industry executives fear that the lack of regular cash flow could lead to three consecutive suspensions by Ekkomed in the reception and processing of new production applications.

Almost 2,000 signatories from all sectors of the film industry have signed an open letter under the title Visibility Zero, highlighting the rebate payments and delays in systematic issues following the agency’s recent restructuring.

A clear demonstration of the important relationship between the industry and the Ministry and Ekkomed was the first absence of representatives from these institutions in the award gala.
