In 2024, RB Jamal Williams was a member of the New Orleans Saints. He was in the book in 2025 for $1.59 million. However, the Saints released Williams in March after two seasons with New Orleans.
The 2025 NFL season is two and a half months away. Teams will have several weeks off until training camp begins. It’s time for players, coaches and front offices to relax. Additionally, the top will evaluate the roster and determine where the upgrade is needed. Bears insider Mike Pendleton reported that Chicago could sign Jamal Williams. First-year coach Ben Johnson was the offensive coordinator for Williams in Detroit.

On the roster heading into the 2025 season, the Bears will have two RBSs back from the 2024 season. D’Andre Swift launched all 17 Chicago games in 2024, with Roshun Johnson being his backup. In the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Bears chose Rutgers’ Kyle Monangui. Plus, the team has Travis Homer. Despite its depth, Bears insider Mike Pendleton reported that the team could consider adding the veteran presence to their backfield.
Chicago has been connected to several free agent RBs this offseason. That included Nick Chubb, who signed with the Houston Texans. No player has a stronger connection to the Bears coaching staff than veteran Jamal Williams. He was released by the Saints in March and is a free agent in 2025. Williams’ most productive season in the NFL came along with former Lions OC Ben Johnson, now Ben Johnson. That would easily fit Chicago for Williams if both parties reach a deal.
In 2022, Jamal Williams rushed for a career-high 1,066 yards and a league-leading 17 rushing touchdowns. Another reason Williams fits seamlessly with the bear is his connection to D’Andre Swift. They shared the Detroit backfield for two seasons. Jamal Williams will be insurance for the Bears. In 2024, he appeared in 20% of the team’s offensive snaps that season. We’ll have to wait for Chicago to make the move and sign Williams for the 2025 season.
