Portugal beat Spain with a penalty kick of 5-3 and won the final of the UEFA Nations League on Sunday after a showdown that ended 2-2, after either side did not score in extra time.

After Nuno Mendes, Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos all scored penalties, Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved Spain’s Alvaro Morata’s spot kick before Neves changed the fifth time to win the team’s fifth.

The victory marks the Portuguese Second Nations League trophy after unlocking the first edition of 2019.

That victory over European champion Spain was a fierce battle as Celecin returned twice from behind.

Cristiano Ronaldo sent the match in extra time when he equalised in the 61st minute with Portugal’s record 138th goal.

Ronaldo, 40, went out on the 88th for a standing ovation and embrace from coach Roberto Martinez.

The sharply contested final appeared to be headed for Spain after Mikel Oyalzabal gave Spain a 2-1 halftime lead. Oyalzabal squeezed the ball past Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa 45 minutes after Pedri played him in the goal.

It was also Spain that he had his first blood after Martin Zubimendi defeated the deadlock with a tap-in in the 21st minute when Portuguese defense failed to deal with Raminyaral’s cross.

Five minutes later, Portugal responded with Nuno Mendes levelling by excavating low shots within a distant post.

A Spanish sense and favorite to win the Ballon d’Or, Ramin Yamal was marked from the game by Portuguese fullback Mendes, making sure that Yamal does not pose a major threat before sinking into extra time.

Blues will be in third place

Earlier on Sunday, Killian Mbappe led France and beat host Germany 2-0 in Stuttgart to take third place.

The Real Madrid forward helped Les Bruce slowly bounce from the first half by scoring one goal and setting another for Michael Ollise.

The goal was Mbappe’s 50th place in international competition for France.
