A junta fighter jet crashed in Myanmar on Tuesday and burned in areas where it saw fierce battles during the civil war. One rebel group claimed it had shot down while state media said it was suffering from mechanical failure.

According to state television MRTV, the aircraft has reported that aircraft have fallen in the Sagan area, about 140 kilometers west of Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city.

It did not identify jet types or mention casualties, and said that search and recovery efforts were underway in the pale town.

Local media reports have identified the plane as broadcast images of a two-seat Chinese FTC-2000G, a fighter’s ground attack jet, and a crashed plane with nearby body parts.

The Sagan region is a hub for armed resistance against the ruling military junta, which seized power from the government of elected Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

Opposition to the takeover began peacefully, but escalated into a civil war as authorities relied on increasingly deadly forces to suppress the opposition.

Ni Ni Kyaw, a spokesman for the militia known as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), told The Associated Press that when it shot down the JET at 12:30pm on Tuesday, the fighter was involved in an attack at a police station in the pale town.

She said military jets have dropped hundreds of bombs into the area to support ground forces fighting the PLA and other resistance groups.

Pra posted a video and photo of the jet’s smoking remains in the pale town village.

The military relies primarily on aircraft from Russia and China, and is increasingly using airstrikes to counter the widespread armed struggle against its control, which continues to supply high-tech weapons to government forces.

The FTC-2000G was first distributed by China in 2022 after the seizure of military power.

Witnesses and independent media reports show that in May a military attack in Sagan struck a school, killing as many as 20 students and two teachers.

The military is believed to have lost at least five helicopters and four jet fighters, but claiming they shot down from the resistance group was impossible to verify due to strict media restrictions and the remoteness of the area where much of the battle takes place.
