Exclusive: Forever Best Friend Assisted International Commercial Rights for Japanese Fantasy Rom-com Animation Chao It’s ahead of the world premiere at the competition at this week’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The Brussels-based company handles sales outside of Asia, France, North America, Latin America and the UK for Aoki Yasuhiro’s debut feature. Set in a world where humans and mermaids coexist, the film follows a quiet office worker whose daily life is confused when offered the opportunity to marry a mermaid princess named Chao.
GKIDS already has North American rights, but EuroZoom will handle the distribution in France, and TOEI will release the film in Japan on August 15th. This is produced by Japanese studio 4ºC. Mind game, Watanabe Ayu The children of the sea, and anthology film Animatrix and memory.
Aoki, who directed several shorts and was an important animator for the anime feature, Lord of the Rings: Rohillim, Steamboy, Neon Genesis Evangelion’s War, explained Chao “A love story about the importance of understanding different cultures in today’s world where conflict continues to infuriate.”
