Wizards of the Coast has signed an exclusive publishing agreement with Giant Skull, a studio led by Star Wars Jedi Director Stig Asmussen, creating a new dungeon and Dragons game. This project is set to be a single-player action-adventure game and sounds like a clear response to the huge success of Gate 3 of Baldur. But before Baldur’s hopes for Gate 4 begin to suppress Baldur’s Gate 4, early signs already indicate that this is a very different experience.
We waited for a while to hear what the giant skull was doing. Last year, Triple-A Studios was officially unveiled, with Stig Asmussen at the helm. Asmussen previously worked on Sony Santa Monica’s original God of War Trilogy, and then stepped up as director of God of Wars 3. He then worked on Star Wars: The Jedi – Star Wars in both the Fallen Order and the Survivors. It’s all been relatively quiet ever since, but after the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, the team has plunged into the dungeon and dragon world.
DND owner Wizards of the Coast is working with Giant Skull on this new game, and the combination of Asmussen’s experience and new comments about the partnership gives us clues to the type of game we play.
“Giant Skull’s talented and experienced team is based on creativity and curiosity,” says Asmussen. “Our goal is to create a rich new dungeon and dragon universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal that players will fully embrace.”
Even with just one sentence, this new DND game sounds as bad as the recent Star Wars, Jedi games. These focus on massive budget stories, the combat systems involved, and cross-cutting mechanics inspired by Metroidvania, and sound like a giant skull building something similar.
If you’re hoping this is Baldur’s Gate 4, I’m here to tell you to adjust your expectations. Baldur’s Gate has always been a CRPG, and with the success of BG3, I will not see the coastal wizard changing it now. Giant Skull’s project is also known as a “single-player action-adventure title,” so it makes sense that the team is leaning towards Asmussen’s previous experience.
Still, if you want to revisit the Larian blockbuster, you can suck back all the best Baldur’s Gate 3 builds and Baldur’s Gate 3 mods.
