Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) has become the first Hollywood Awards group to strongly emerge against the generation AI, blocking projects using technology from the Golden Reel Awards considerations.
“We support and praise the advances in technology that supports artists’ work,” the group said Thursday. “However, standards for the legal and ethical use of generator AI have not yet been established and far from being widely accepted.
MPSE continues: “Because of these concerns and the organization’s mission to protect and celebrate the creative human efforts of sound and music editing, sound design, Foley’s artistry, MPSE will not accept projects that consider the awards that generate AI will be used to create elements of the final soundtrack.”
The Golden Reel Award qualification rules have been updated. It also includes winners of last year’s feature film Dunes: Part 2 (photograph).
Group President David Barber said the time has already passed to establish guardrails, saying, “AI dams are broken and water is on top of us. Choosing what to embrace as an award-worthy filmmaking is a way to deflect those waters while working on this exponential change.”
MPSE said it is open to future technical support for its members’ work.
