Hosted by Prince Albert of Monaco, the final day of the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (Beff), the leader has vowed to support and closed it in pursuit of global responsibility to protect the oceans.

William of Prince of Wales said the challenge of protecting the world’s oceans was “something we’ve never faced before” and the clock was ticking.

“I think urgency and optimism have the power to bring about the actions needed to change the course of history. I am an optimist because as the founder of the Earthshot Awards, I see incredible examples of ideas, innovations and technologies that use the power of the ocean while protecting its vitality.”

“When we see human activity, we see beautiful sea forests diminishing into barren deserts, our ocean bases are simply heart-pounding for many, and it is an urgent call for awakening just what is happening in our oceans.

It’s not a “problem”

Meanwhile, in his closing speech, French President Emmanuel Macron denies climate change and criticizes the country for cutting budgets on the issue.

“We’ve heard that basically climate change, threats to biodiversity, marine issues are all questions of opinion,” Macron said. He continued:

“I’m going to tell you: No, it’s not an opinion, so I don’t have the right to do it, but it’s scientifically established.”

The French president also suggested potential developments in the near future:

“We have an obligation to mobilize because science is clear and the facts are there. There is no inevitability. Therefore, some governments will make strong decisions and mobilize the international community in the coming days.”

The main focus of the weekly summit was to promote the ratification of the High Sea Treaty, which allows for conservation in international waters.

The forum is the forerunner of Nice’s United Nations Marine Conference (UNOC), and will be attended by more than 50 world leaders. The US administration will not send representatives.
