The Russian defense ministry said on Sunday that its forces reached the western edge of the Donetsk region, one of the four states that were illegally annexed in 2022, with the military saying its forces “developing an attack” in nearby Dnipropetrovsk region.

This is probably the first time that Russian troops have been forced into the region in a war of more than three years. Ukraine denied this claim.

Russia’s progress will mark a significant setback for the already extended army of Ukraine’s already extended army, as peace talks are stagnating and Russian troops bring progressive benefits elsewhere.

Putin’s army also appears to be within a few kilometres of Smie city, three years after Ukraine was forced out of the northern region.

Russia and Ukraine exchange air attack

One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a Russian air strike in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine. These strikes came after Russian attacks targeted the regional capital on Saturday. Regional police in Khalkiv said on Sunday that the number of deaths from Saturday’s attacks had risen to six. More than 20 other people were injured.

Russia fired a total of 49 explosive drones, decoys and three missiles overnight, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Sunday. Forty drones were fired down or electronically packed.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said its forces fired down 61 Ukrainian drones overnight, including near the capital.

Five people were injured on Sunday in a Ukrainian drone attack on a parking lot in Russia’s Belgorod region, according to regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. Local authorities say two people were injured when a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire on a chemical plant in the Tula region.
