The ship that transports activists to Gaza to deliver humanitarian assistance rescued four migrants on Thursday after leaping into the sea from another ship to prevent Libyan authorities from greeting them.
The vessel Madleen, run by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was warned by the European Union’s Frontex border control agency, arrived at a location in the Mediterranean, finding 30-40 people in a “fastly deflated boat.”
When Madreen launched its own inflatable rescue ship, Libyan coast guard vessels approached at high speed, the coalition said.
“To avoid being taken to Libyan authorities, the four of them jumped into the sea and began to desperately swim towards Madreen,” he said, rescued.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition protested the return of other immigrants to Libya.
They also call on Italy, Greece and Malta to pick up people who are currently riding Madreen and lead them to safety in Europe.
Swedish climate activist Greta Samberg is one of the 12 activists on board aboard Madrien who left Sicily on Sunday on a mission aimed at breaking Gaza’s ocean blockade and providing humanitarian aid while raising awareness of the growth of the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave.
The voyage is expected to last for seven days.
Among others are “Game of Thrones” actor Liam Cunningham and Lima Hassan, a French member of the Palestinian European Parliament.
She is forbidden from entering Israel due to her active opposition to Israeli military operations in Gaza.
After nearly three months of lockdown aimed at putting pressure on Hamas, Israel began to allow basic aid to Gaza last month, but humanitarian workers warned of hunger unless full supply flows resume.
Almost all of Gaza’s 2.3 million population is acutely malnourished, with one in five Palestinians on the brink of starvation, the World Food Program warns.
Last month, an attempt by the Freedom Fleet to reach Gaza was unsuccessful after another ship from the group’s vessel was attacked while sailing in international waters off Malta.
The group denounced Israel for attacks that damaged the front of the ship.
