Edinburgh film festival to close with Irvine Welsh doc ‘Reality Is Not Enough’

The reality is not sufficientA documentary about TrainSpotting Author Irvine Wales is set to premiere the world as a closing night film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF, August 14-20).

Directed by Paul Sng, the feature discovered Wales was at a crossroads and was a huge success in several film adaptations of his book, which has sold six million copies worldwide. With his hedonistic days approaching the end, the candid author makes a journey “exploring the boundaries of consciousness through hallucinating trips.”

The documentary combines intimate observation footage from his novels by actors Liam Neeson, Maxine Peak, Ruth Nega, Stephen Graham and musician Nick Cave, as well as rare archival film clips and reading.

Edinburgh-based filmmaker SNG is known for his documentaries Polystyrene: I’m a clichéwon two bifas in 2021 tissueIt premiered at Sheffield Docfest in 2023.

Edinburgh-based production company LS Films has raised joint funding and is supported by Screen Scotland. Sarah Drummond, Managing Director of LS Films, is an executive producer.

UK releases will be handled by KaleIdoscope.

78th The Eiff edition is set to open as an Eva Victor comedy drama Sorry, baby The complete programme will be announced on July 2nd.
